While George Thompson is rated over 1600 by the USA Table Tennis Association, his greater skill is developing the talents of other players as a USATT Certified State Coach.  George has expanded his coaching experience at Northern Kentucky University, The Boys and Girls Club in Newport, KY and the YMCA in Fort Thomas, KY, and the Dayton, KY YMCA.  George is also a USATT Certified Tournament Referee.  While coaching players of all ages is high priority, he has also participated in select tournaments throughout the past few years.  He placed second in the 1475 and under group in the Dayton, OH tournament in 2002 and first in the 1475 and under group in the 2002 Cincinnati tournament.  He also placed second in the Spring 2004 Northern Kentucky tournament.  Recently, he won the Gold medal in the 2005 Southern Ohio Senior Olympics (age 55-59 group) and won the Silver medal in 2004.

George’s philosophy on coaching is:

1. “A club coach must be able to teach a person, whatever the age, to enjoy table tennis.  The better a person plays, the more he enjoys it.  Worrying about every point or shot is not important.
2. A club coach must provide a professional environment and the right equipment to help a student play his best.
3. A coach must release a student when he has reached a certain level.  A student may move on to a coach on the state, regional, national, or international level.

A player may leave his coach and play and learn on his own.  This is the reason a coach must start a student on all the right things to do.

A United States Table Tennis coach certification is given to players who pass a test and know the right methods to instruct a student.  If you have someone who wishes to play, have a certified coach teach them the skills of blocking, chopping, spinning, serving and smashing.  For a player to become great, these skills should be learned the right way in the right order.”

Training Fees & Availability:

George charges $10 an hour for lessons at the Northern Kentucky club.  He has the latest equipment in to facilitate his lessons—Newgy robot, professional tables, training videos, paddles and balls.

He charges $15 an hour to go to a student’s home; also a 2 hour minimum (plus travel if located more than 30 miles away).
